What is an Apostolate?

Apostolates are ministries devoted to the mission of the Church, which is God's mercy. Apostolates are our way of living the life of Christian love that is required of every member of the faithful. Each member of SSP is called to maintain at least one Apostolate of their own choosing in addition to the Society-wide apostolate of Evangelization.

Apostolates can be a number of different things - with a large number of different personalities, talents, and vocations, Apostolates are a great way for SSP members to use their unique gifts for the greater glory of God.

"[W]ithout a witness to mercy, life becomes fruitless and sterile, as if sequestered in a barren desert. The time has come for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instils in us the courage to look to the future with hope." --Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus, Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy
Parish Life Examples:
Often the victim of oversight, an incredibly important way to get involved in Catholic living is in our very own home parish of Annunciation. Many of SSP's members are involved in the following roles:
  • Altar Serving (Sunday, Daily, Adoration, and Funeral)
  • Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Commuion
  • Ministry of the Word (Lectoring)
  • Morning Mass
  • Sacristan services
  • Greeting
  • Handing out bulletins
  • Teaching Catechism classes
  • Singing in the Choir
  • Bringing Communion to the homebound
Contact: Fr. Todd Grogan for Annunication or Holly O'Hara for St. Monica-St.George
Service and Justice:
The following examples are in addition to the many service opportunities offered through the University of Cincinnati and in the local area.

St. Vincent DePaul Society
The SVDP at Annunciation takes care of the needs of the local poor in our surrounding neighborhood community. Bl. Pier Giorgio was a very active member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Turin, and would often be seen bringing supplies around Turin in a wheel barrow to the poor. They meet at Annunciation once per month, the first Tuesday after the first Sunday of each month. You can learn more about it by clicking here.

Little Sisters of the Poor
The Little Sisters of the Poor are right up the street from Annunciation and we have several students aiding the residents on a weekly basis.
Prison Ministry
"I was in prison, and you visited me" (Matthew 25:36) This apostolate seeks to find Christ in the imprisoned. We help sing at Mass with the other men/women, and are working to eventually teach music lessons in order to build a choir capable of singing the highest beautiful praises of God.
Life Protection and Advocacy
Through the UC Students for Life and Pregnancy Center East, this apostolate works to defend the life of the unborn from abortion as well as support mothers in need. PCE also runs a chastity education program in order to bring up a new generation that nurtures life, understands love and responsibility, and puts it into practice. Join us to support the culture of life!

Prayer Apostolate
We strive to practice the Spiritual works of mercy as well as the corporal. The names of the supporters and benefactors of the Society are written in the SSP book of prayer. Commitment to the Prayer Apostolate entails attending 8am morning Mass at Annunciation at least 2 times each week and staying to pray Morning Prayer with Fr. Grogan, offering up as an intention those whose names are written in the book of prayer and the conversion of the world, starting with campus. Students have the opportunity to become an altar server for daily Mass as a part of this apostolate.
