The Offices of the Day
The principle offices of the day:
-Morning prayer: Traditionally done at 6:00am, or sunrise
-Opening invitatory
-Hymn
-Psalmody--consists of two psalms and an Old Testament canticle
-Short Bible Reading
-Responsory
-Gospel Canticle: Canticle of Zeccharia (Benedictus)
-Intercessions
-Our Father
-Closing Prayer and Dismissal
-Evening prayer: Traditionally done at 6:00pm, or sunset
-Opening invitatory
-Hymn
-Psalmody--consists of two psalms and an New Testament canticle
-Short Bible Reading
-Responsory
-Gospel Canticle: Canticle of Mary (Magnificat)
-Intercessions
-Our Father
-Closing Prayer and Dismissal
The smaller offices of the day:
-Office of Readings: Strict monastic orders do this at 3:00am, but it can be paired with any of the other offices in the day.
-Invitatory Psalm
-Hymn
-Psalmody: consists of three psalms
-Responsory
-Large scripture reading, (not from Gospels) and responsory
-Large reading from a Church father, saint, Church council, pope, bishop, or other form of Catholic Faith instruction and responsory.
-Te Deum: on Sundays and Solemnities only
-Final Prayer and Dismissal (if done by itself)
or:
-Move straight to psalmody of the other office that Office of Readings is being paired with.
-Daytime prayer: which can be further divided into Midmorning at 9:00am, Midday at 12:00pm, and Midafternoon at 3:00pm
